Slightly Stoopid

Interview by Scott Preston

Febuary 17, 2008

The band has evolved into one of America ‘s most successful independent touring bands. In 2006, touring industry trade magazine Pollstar ranked the band as one of the Top 50 draws in the States. It’s a distinction hard-earned over the past decade, as the band has honed its breezy blend of everything from the Grateful Dead and Dire Straits to Joe Higgs and Delroy Wilson. And it’s been one not only enjoyed by Stoopidheads, but also Hollywood : The band’s music has been featured in such TV shows as The OC and North Shore and in such movies as Step Into Liquid and Norbit and She’s the Man . Cincy Groove: Who did you work with on your latest cd?

Miles Doughty: We worked with G Love, The Guru from Gang Star, Angelo Moore, Paul Leary. We had the chance to work with a lot of people.

Cincy Groove: What brought about Slightly Stoopid creating their own record label?

Miles Doughty: Well we can put out our own cd’s now. If we can do it all on our own I would rather do it that way. We can make our music the way we want it. We don’t have to worry about all the politics. We play to just as many people as some of these MTV bands that will come in and play the same venue we played to just as many people. We don’t have songs on the radio, we don’t have videos. We have dedicated fans who come out because they know we are going to come out to their town 2-3 times a year.

Cincy Groove: How many shows does Slightly Stoopid play in a year?

Miles Doughty: We are on the road about 200 days a year.

Cincy Groove: Before music became full time what did you do for a living?

Miles Doughty: I used to work at a sports store. I also used to set up concerts at a place called Humphreys in San Diego, CA. I haven’t had a real job in 8 years.

Cincy Groove: How did you guys end up hooking up with Bradley from Sublime early in your career?

Miles Doughty: We met him when we were like 15 – 16 years old. He asked us to come to do this show at a place called The Foot Hill Tavern in Long Beach. We were little kids all stoked. After we got done playing, Bradley was like “Let’s go make a record!”. He really got our foot in the door by putting us on his Skunk Record Label. It paved the way for whats going on now.

Cincy Groove: Who has Slightly Stoopid had the chance to play with?

Miles Doughty: We have been playing a lot with a bunch of reggae legends. We went on tour with the Marley Brothers, Inner Circle, Half Pint.

Cincy Groove: Do you have a favorite venue you like to play in?

Miles Doughty: Red Rocks in Colorado and The Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA.

Cincy Groove: Has Slightly Stoopid played in Europe?

Miles Doughty: Yeah we have been there a couple times. Portugal and Amsterdam are my favorites.
