Langerado Festival Headed To Miami In 2009

The 2009 edition of Florida’s annual Langerado Music Festival will be held at Bicentennial Park in Miami, marking the event’s fifth venue change since launching seven years ago, according to festival co-producer Ethan Schwartz.

Next year’s Langerado Festival, to be held March 6-8, will feature approximately 60 artists on four stages. A full lineup will be announced in early November. “From who we’ve booked so far it’s going to be really fresh,” Schwartz tells “I would say that 75%-80% of the bands have never played the festival before.”

Last year’s Langerado Festival, held at Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in the Florida Everglades, featured R.E.M., Built To Spill, Of Montreal, the Beastie Boys, the Roots, Gov’t Mule, 311, the National, Phil Lesh and Matisyahu, among others. The four-day festival drew about 25,000 people per day and grossed $4.3 million, according to Schwartz.

Schwartz says he and Langerado Festival co-producer Mark Brown have diversified the event’s lineup over the past four years. “We started out as a jam-oriented festival,” he explains. “It’s more exciting for us to put together these lineups every year, because there is so much great music out there.”

Since launching Langerado with about 3,500 people on a small parcel of land behind a baseball stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, the event’s attendance has grown by approximately 50% each year, according to Schwartz. Past venue changes were made because “we’ve outgrown everything,” he explains. But next year’s move to the 35,000-capacity Bicentennial Park was a matter of logistics, he notes.

“There was a 15-mile single lane road on the highway, and it was difficult for attendees and people coming for single days,” Schwartz says of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. “We just want to make it as easy for fans, and especially the bands that are coming to play a great show.”

Schwartz expects up to 35,000 people to attend next year’s Langerado Festival in Miami. Weekend tickets for the event will cost between $175-$200, with prices subject to change. Updates will be available via
