Energized by their appearances at this year’s SXSW Festival, The Seedy Seeds are hitting Chicago this weekend as part of their spring tour with friends and animated music makers, The Winter Sounds.
2012 marked the band’s fourth invitation to appear at SXSW, a history punctuated by their 1st place conquest in Jansport’s Battle of the Bands (2011) and a dizzying array of showcases and day parties. This year they led a slew of other acts from Cincinnati, rallying the battle cry for a city finally gaining cred as a music and cultural destination.
Their success at SXSW and venues around the country backs the Seeds’ reputation as a convert-making act. As funk legend Bootsy Collins puts it, “The Seedy Seeds are so original it hurts… If you like live shows, you will love this one!” The trio, who fearlessly combine seemingly incompatible instruments, and unapologetically stitch together whatever musical ingredients may be on hand, create a surprisingly cohesive sound. No avenue is completely safe in TSS’ resourceful no-holds-barred approach to reaching pure folktronic nirvana.
Many first heard TSS when their “Earned Average Dance America” was featured as an NPR Song of the Day. Their hit cover of “My Roots Go Down” recently became the theme for Whole Foods’ “Grow” webisodes. As for the future, say the Seeds, “This tour is something of a victory-lap-meets-seminal-Braveheart-moment.” Back on the road again with a new arsenal of music and new media, they’re poised to take their freedom, and their fans, by storm.
