Jonny Fritz will be joining the “Queen of Rockabilly,” Wanda Jackson, for tour dates kicking off late November into mid-December following a sold-out West Coast tour with The Devil Makes Three (scroll down for complete tour dates). Along with songs off his albums I’m Not Ready to Be a Daddy and Down On the Bikini Line, Jonny will be previewing songs from his upcoming release, Dad Country, recorded at Jackson Brown‘s Los Angeles studio and featuringTaylor Goldsmith, Griffin Goldsmith, Tay Straithairn and Wylie Gelber, along with Spencer Cullum Jr. and Joshua Hedley.
While you might not hear Jonny’s music on commercial country radio, he’s been attracting fans and fellow musicians with his honest, funny/sad songs (think John Prine), as well as his collaborations with Dawes, Deer Tick and others. The Nashville Scene proclaimed his most recent album, Down On the Bikini Line, as “one of the filthiest, funniest and most innocent country records in recent memory.” In the past year, Jonny’s been interviewed by CMT and singled out by Rolling Stone as a “can’t-miss act” at SxSW 2012 touring for his new brand of “Dad Country.”
Formerly known as “Jonny Corndawg,” he has reclaimed his given name, Jonny Fritz, for his endeavors from here on out. He recently told Brooklyn Vegan, “Y’all can still call me whatever the hell you want. I just cannot get the words to come out of my mouth anymore.“
For the uninitiated, Fritz is a Virginia-raised and Nashville-cured songwriter/burgeoning country star that worships the altar of Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, and Michael Hurley. He toured as a solo artist for years on his motorcycle before settling in Nashville and putting his songs down on record. He became a hit with his fellow musicians first, and was invited to support Alabama Shakes, Trampled by Turtles, Dawes, Shooter Jennings, Deer Tick and others, cementing his reputation as a live performer.
