After a hiatus of several years (with Big Lazy leader Stephen Ulrich, spending time as a composer for shows like HBO’s Bored to Death), Big Lazy is back with a new album, video, and tour.
Big Lazy’s fifth album, Don’t Cross Myrtle, dwells in the landscape of gritty yet elegant noir Americana. With sparse instrumentation, the trio creates evocative musical narratives with an undeniable sense of place and character. With a nod towards classic guitar instrumentals (Link Wray, Santo and Johnny) and a fiery performance style that swerves into improvisational jazz, the new album captures the essence of the trio’s legendary live shows.
Enthusiastic fans have described Big Lazy as: “Music to drive back to jail by”, “The Soundtrack to my life”, “Avant Twang”, “Garage Chamber Music”, “Trashphisticated”, “Crime Jazz”, “The Weegee of Guitar”, “Monk meets Wray”, Guitar Noir”. Don’t Cross Myrtle is likely to keep the accolades coming.
