The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of Pops Conductor John Morris Russell presents “Peter and the Wolf” on November 19 at Taft Theatre, the first Lollipops Family Concert of the 2016-17 season. The concert will feature original illustrations by Cincinnati’s own C.F. Payne accompanying Prokofiev’s delightful musical tale, Peter and the Wolf. Angela Powell Walker, artistic director for the School for Creative and Performing Arts, will narrate the work. The classic work by Prokofiev has long been used to introduced young children to orchestral music, as each character of the story is represented by a particular instrument in the orchestra. Also on the animal-themed program is Percy Grainger’s Shepherd’s Hey, the “Kookaburra Song,” and Elgar’s “The Wild Bears.”

“I am thrilled to be working with the Cincinnati Pops on this universal classic story by Sergei Prokofiev,” said Mr. Payne, whose iconic art can be seen around Cincinnati, including “The Singing Mural” on Central Parkway. “The art I am working on is inspired by what I’m learning in creating my pictures for another classic tale featuring a boy, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I’m not trying to tell a Russian tale or an American tale, rather a classic universal tale in hopes those who go to the Cincinnati Pops will experience the Prokofiev’s music in a grander way.”

Lollipops Family Concerts are specifically designed for children ages 2-9 and their families, as a way of introducing them to the joys of orchestral music. A Family Fun Zone will be open beginning at 9:30 a.m. and immediately following the concert, offering crafts and the opportunity to try different instruments. Mr. Russell, known around the country for his dedication to music education as well as his consummate artistry, brings classics to life in a new way while delighting audiences of all generations with his Pops leadership. Additional Lollipops Family Concerts are scheduled for Jan. 28, 2017 (Green Eggs and Ham) and June 10, 2017 (Superheroes: Up, Up and Away!).

The Cincinnati Pops is grateful to Lollipops Series Sponsor, UDF/Homemade Brand. The Orchestra extends it sincerest appreciation to the George L. & Anne P. Heldman Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation for their tremendous support of the Family Lollipops Concerts for the 2016-17 Season. Additional support is provided by The Cincinnati Symphony Club.
