Following a year of nonstop touring with a trio in support of her critically acclaimed sophomore album, In The Magic Hour, musician/songstress Aoife O’Donovan will perform solo on the 21-city Release The Hounds tour, a night of acoustic music with Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge beginning March 17, 2017, in Cambridge, MA.
You can hear a taste of her solo performance in the new recording of “Stanley Park” released today as part of Spotify “Singles.” Also included is the cover of “Lakes of Pontchartrain” with violinist Colin Jacobsen and cellist Eric Jacobsen. The newly launched two-song weekly playlist features exclusives of an original track (a-side) and a cover (b-side) recorded in Spotify’s NYC studio by 20-plus top artists.
In May 2017, O’Donovan, in partnership with Cuba Rhythm & Views , will help lead a remarkable cultural exchange in Havana, Cuba between American and Cuban musicians. She will accompany select fans on this cultural trip of a lifetime and meet some of Cuba’s most celebrated performers and artists. She will perform in two Cuba Rhythm & Views-produced concerts with world-renowned Cuban pianist Aldo Lopez-Gavilan, at Fabrica de Arte Cubano, and again with Havana’s premier chamber group, Orquesta de Camara de La Habana.
During a recent musical guest appearance on A Prairie Home Companion, O’Donovan performed “Magpie” with new host Chris Thile, who appears on the album track. She will perform on the show again December 10, at Town Hall in New York as part of the house band, followed by a series of house band guest appearances in early 2017.
Written in the wake of her grandfather’s death, In The Magic Hour has garnered tremendous praise since its January 2016 release as “gorgeous” (Rolling Stone Country) and as an “exhilarating…exploratory” (MOJO 4-star) ode to her idyllic childhood summers surrounded by family. The Guardian said Aoife possesses “the ability to surprise an audience with the contrast between her gentle appearance at the microphone and the invisible punch of her performance.”
Produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Neko Case) and including special guests Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Gabriel Kahane among others, In The Magic Hour is Aoife O’Donovan’s follow-up to her 2013 solo debut Fossils, which earned props from the New York Times, NPR and President Obama, who included a track on his 2015 summer vacation playlist
