DownBeat has exclusively premiered ‘On My Own’, the first music video from Madeleine Peyroux’s upcoming album, ‘Anthem’. “I think of ‘On My Own’ as a new song about loneliness,” Peyroux commented to DownBeat. “I feel a little odd, too small, too big, out of place and alone. But the world around me is also strange, full of all sizes, all perspectives, constantly changing. So, perhaps I, too, can change.”

More of DownBeat’s write-up: The personal is political, but singer Madeleine Peyroux made sure to keep her pending album—Anthem (UMG) due out Aug. 31—from being preachy. On the disc—which was produced by Larry Klein, who’s worked with everyone from Freddie Hubbard to Tracy Chapman and Melody Gardot—Peyroux explores contemporary society on a handful of tracks written during the 2016 election cycle. And “On My Own,” a first-person trip through a day in Peyroux’s life, finds the singer turning in a seemingly playful track that’s as tied to a Kinksian pop lineage as it is to lightly swinging jazz and the singer-songwriter genre.

‘On My Own’ went to radio earlier this month. Jazziz Magazine premiered the audio of the single:

A compelling storyteller’s voice shines through on Peyroux’s confident ‘Anthem’, out August 31st (UMG). The lyrics are smart, witty and darkly hopeful, and Peyroux’s characters and settings are so vividly drawn, it’s as if a series of short films have come alive through song. Peyroux’s cinematic storytelling is utterly engaging, enhanced by the spot-on accompaniment that complements each track — the mischievous harmonica on ‘A Sunday Afternoon’, the wicked guitar on ‘Down on Me’, the pace of the understated ‘Anthem’ (a Leonard Cohen cover,) and the sly, delightful ‘Honey Party’.

‘Anthem’ was Produced and co-written by four-time Grammy Winner Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock). From its remarkable writing to its savvy mix of subtly topical commentary and outright irreverence, Peyroux’s ‘Anthem’ marks a defining moment in the career of a long-respected artist – it’s an album that captures the maturity, humor, intelligence and depth of a woman who has something meaningful to say, even as she entertains.
