John Flansburgh says, “We’ve had the good luck of collaborating with many designers on some memorable album covers, but with ‘BOOK’ (with 144 pages of original art) we had the new challenge of creating an original portfolio or art book — like something that makes sense on a coffee table or taken in while enjoying the album on headphones. Creating something equally as beautiful as it was immediately arresting was a tricky balancing act. Combining very bold lyrics hand-typed into graphic elements with some often shocking original street photography — and finding harmony in those chaotic elements — is the beauty created by ‘BOOK’.”
“The last thing I would have expected while endlessly typing at 2am in the studio was a Grammy nomination,” says Paul. “It’s equal parts wonderful and inexplicable. ‘BOOK’ is exactly the opposite of where technology is pushing everything. But then again maybe Auto-tune will be interesting in 60 years.”
A 144-page full-color, cloth-bound hardcover book and full-length album, BOOK was born through a series of brainstorms with longtime collaborator and graphic design legend Paul Sahre when they decided to team up with Brooklyn street photographer Brian Karlsson. Sahre’s implementation of IBM’s Selectric typewriter adds a striking effect throughout BOOK’s visual component as well. Flansburgh shares, “Paul took this crude device and showed what you could really do with it creatively, and combined with Brian’s photography it made up the secret sauce for the book.” BOOK finds TMBG expanding their own worldview through multiple mediums while continuing to refine their songwriting craft. The album is packed with the band’s signature vocal harmonies, dazzling guitar rock antics, and deceivingly dark lyrics.
The band also just announced a new run of March 2023 Southeast dates for their massive North American tour, which continues next month. Tickets will be on sale this Friday. They’ve also recently announced new dates in Providence, RI, and New Haven, CT (New Year’s Eve show) which will celebrate all of Flood, and more, as well as a new San Diego, CA show, which will feature music from Book and Flood, with a heavy dose of Flood favorites, including special horn selections, and more. With the well-being of their fans and team in mind, the tour had been postponed multiple times due to COVID. Performing their seminal album Flood in full throughout the tour, the band will celebrate their valiant return to the stage while ringing in their 40th anniversary as a band.
