Shelley King Is Coming To The Southgate House Revival On 6/25 With Carolyn Wonderland

6/25/24 – Southgate House Revival, 111 E 6th St, Newport, KY – Buy Tickets

Austin’s music royalty, Shelley King, is taking her press-approved “powerhouse” (The Netherlands’ Bluestown Music) and “show-stopping” (East Portland Blog) vocals on the road this spring and summer for an eclectic array of performances. Due to the groundswell of support for her recent shows and her latest album, Madam Mystic (Lemonade Records), more dates have been added across the U.S. with shows in Alaska (May 10 and 11) and New York City (June 16). See full itinerary below.

This week King, heads to New Orleans where she has three shows scheduled including Saturday, May 4 at the legendary New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as a special guest of Marcia Ball.

King can often be found performing as Ball’s special guest and also as a songwriting collaborator. Ball’s latest album, Shine Bright, features the track “When the Mardi Gras is Over” which was written by King, Ball, and Tim Cook (The subdudes).

Since its release, the track has been a perennial favorite at shows.

Also among the numerous songs Ball and King have written together is “Hurricane Party,” which was released on King’s previous album Kick Up Your Heels, and features Ball and Delbert McClinton. The Houston Chronicle noted, “‘Hurricane Party’ (is) a tune about endurance that King co-wrote with Marcia Ball, each of them trading lines and vocal bits by cell phone until they had a song. ‘It’s about accepting what’s happening,’ King says. ‘About the gathering of a community in a way. For a lot of people it’s something you can’t change. So you push through with perseverance and hope to come out the other side.'”

King’s talent and commitment to putting on a great live show, as well as her commitment to being of service to her community, led her to be recognized by the Texas Legislature and appointed Official Texas State Musician. The organization has also given her a grant to bring her live show to underserved areas of Texas as part of the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) Rural Tours Initiative. Since March, King has gone into small cities throughout the state, with another scheduled for May 25 in Marlin, TX at Dingrando Park.

Even with all the tour stops coming, King is set to perform and connect with everyone anywhere with her live streaming “Soul-O Show.” Initially presented during the pandemic lockdown, the newly re-instated show features King with just her acoustic guitar. She performs as well as takes song requests and answers questions from the live chat. “I was able to make a lot of connections with people far and wide on the livestreams a few years ago. And now out on tour I’ve had the chance to met some of them,” celebrates King. Stay tuned for more live “Soul-O Shows” to be announced, which will be streamed via King’s Facebook and YouTube, as well as on Austin Music TV Channel 16 (where music videos and pre-recorded shows by Shelley are broadcast every Wednesday).

King also let her creative juices flow on a fanciful new video for the single, “Time Means Nothing,” which she directed. Shot partly at Denver’s historic D & F Clock Tower, the clip is a whimsical romp through time travel where the Subdudes’ John Magnie plays the quirky part of the magical elevator “conductor”, and each floor welcomes a new character from a different era.

“I came up with the idea of time travel where the elevator is our portal,” explains King. “We travel through time and collect different characters from the past and the future. Maybe we are all trying to get to our destination but as it turns out, the journey through time with the other travelers is the real party. That’s the message — Time doesn’t matter. It’s all about here and now and the experiences we can share together.”
